Reining Breeders Sale Alumnus Wins Futurity
September 2, 2003 - The Legacy Reining Breeders Sale has offered the best in yearling reining prospects from Green Valley Farm, Kyle Ranch, Dell Hendricks Reining Horses, McQuay Stables, and Tom McCutcheon Reining Horses since its inception, and the first "graduates" of the Sale have come of age in 2003. With that milestone, the Legacy Sale has seen its first futurity winner, with the Co-Championship of the Kansas Reining Horse Association Sunflower Slide Futurity August 29-31 going to Starbucks Sidekick, ridden by Dell Hendricks. Hendricks purchased the gray stallion at the 2001 Legacy Sale where it was consigned by McQuay-Easton, then sold him in February of his 2-year-old year to Doug Adair of Scottsdale, Arizona. By Smart Starbuck, Starbucks Sidekick is out of Hollywood Dun It daughter, Dun It For Chex. Interestingly, the dam of Dun It For Chex, Silver And Blue Chex, was the mare on which Dell Hendricks won his first NRHA reining. At the Sunflower Slide Futurity, held in Topeka, Kansas, Hendricks rode Starbucks Sidekick to a score of 149 to tie. That earned him a tie and a Co-Championship with himself on his other mount, Sir Smart Whiz, by Smart Chic Olena out of a Topsail Whiz daughter, also owned by Adair. Next on the agenda for Starbucks Sidekick will be the All American Quarter Horse Congress Reining Futurity, then the NRHA Futurity. This first win by a Legacy Sale consignee gives testament to the quality of the horses consigned to the sale, according to Tim McQuay. "This is exactly what our goal was for the Legacy Sale. We wanted to create a sale where we consign great yearlings that achieve success in the show pen. We're not 'culling' our herds, but in fact, consigning top yearlings out of exceptional mares." This year's Legacy Sale is slated for October 19. A special "Welcome Party" is slated at Green Valley Farms for Saturday, October 18 and everyone is invited for a night of delicious barbecue, entertainment and special video viewings beginning at 6 pm. Horses will be available for viewing beginning Saturday morning at Green Valley Farms in Aubrey, Texas. The sale will begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday. All yearlings in the 2003 sale are enrolled in the NRBC and the sale is strictly a black-type sale. Every broodmare in the sale is either a performer or producer. Likewise, all the sale yearlings are out of producing or performing mares. The individuals who make up the Legacy Reining Breeders Group are some of the most prominent reiners and breeders in the industry. Tim McQuay is the National Reining Horse Association's All Time Leading Rider and McQuay Stables is the home of $3 Million Sire, Hollywood Dun It. Pete and Tamra Kyle's Whitesboro, Texas Ranch is home to Reining and Cow Horse World Champion Tejons Peppy Doc, while Dell Hendricks Reining Horses is home to NRBC Champion Starlights Wrangler. Tom McCutcheon Reining Horses and Green Valley Farm in Aubrey, Texas, are home to Lil Ruf Peppy and Smart Starbuck, as well as USET Champion Smartest Chic Olena.
