The 2001 Marty Simensen Memorial Trophy Honoree

In 1996 Hilltop Farm and David and Terri Smith of Marblehead, MA established a humanitarian award in memory of a superb veterinarian, Marty Simensen, who was lost to lung cancer. Marty's tremendous dedication to animals in need, to the people behind them, and to the protection of all lives involved in horse sport was exemplified through out his career. Marty was a friend to all, from pony clubbers to Olympians, and his work on the AHSA's Drug Enforcement Committee secured the protection of horses in sport as we know it today. The Marty Simensen Memorial Trophy was established to recognize individuals in the equestrian community who have shown extraordinary compassion or involvement in the welfare of animals and in some cases, the involvement may have impacted the lives of people.

This year, the Marty Simensen Memorial Trophy will be presented to a man who deeply personifies the very spirit of the award. Dr. Denys Frappier, one of Canada's longest serving FEI veterinarians, was also a friend and colleague of Dr. Simensen's. Dr. Frappier's work will be honored this year for his lifetime achievements as an internationally acclaimed veterinarian, a teacher, a skilled practitioner, but most specifically for his tremendous dedication and contribution to the American Fondouk. The American Fondouk is a charitable animal hospital in Fez, Moroccco funded by the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty for Animals. The Fondouk is dedicated to animal welfare and its services are free to the poor working people of Morocco.
