The 2001 Marty Simensen Memorial Trophy Honoree -
Dr. Denys Frappier - Page 2

Dr, Denys Frappier Dr. Frappier served as the Canadian Equestrian Federation (CEF)'s Team Vet for over 30 years, attending Olympic Games, World Equestrian Games, Pan American Games, and various Team Tours for the dressage, jumping, and Three-Day teams. His expertise frequently made the difference between a horse competing or not and it was not uncommon for other countries to seek his expertise. In addition, Dr. Frappier served on many FEI committees and founded the Drug Control Committee of the CEF. He was a frequent speaker at International Veterinary Symposiums and his commitment to doing research and mentoring young vets has been ongoing through his career. As a researcher, Dr. Frappier has had many articles published, has authored three books, and taught at the University of Jordon.

These notable career achievements indeed establish Dr. Frappier at the top of his field, yet it is his ongoing contribution as a humanitarian that so appropriately begets him the honor of the Marty Simensen Memorial Award. In 1994, Dr. Frappier left his thriving practice in Hudson Quebec, Canada and took the position as the Executive Director of the American Fondouk.

As described by Sharon Brooks, nominator of this year's honoree and the former Chair and Chef d'Equipe of the CEF: "Morocco is a third world country and its ancient city of Fez exists almost in a time warp.…Today, as in days of old, it is the donkey and mule, beasts of burden, which pull the carts and carry the loads. The people in this country are excessively poor. There is very little money for food and necessities for them, let alone the livestock. Veterinary care would be an unheard of expense. However, without their donkey, the family will have no means to earn their living." An American woman, Amy Bend Bishop, established the American Fondouk in the 1920's after she observed the trying conditions in which these animals were forced to live and work. She left the newly founded "oasis for animals" in the hands of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals whose work is often international in scope.
