Fourth Event Rider Has Died at Burghley

Statement isssued on behalf of the organisers of the Burghley
Horse Trials BHTA issued at 20:20, Saturday 4th September
1999:
It
is with the deepest regret that we announce that Simon Long
suffered a fatal accident while competing at Burghley Horse
Trials, Stamford, Lincolnshire on Saturday 4th September 1999.
Simon, aged 38, from Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire was single.
The
accident was at the rails coming out of the water at Fence
20, The Sunken Water. The horse, Springleaze Macaroo, a 9
year old Liver chestnut Gelding, owned by Mr Ben Walden, number
49, was uninjured.
Jane
Holderness-Roddam, Chairman of the British Horse Association
said: "This is a great tragedy for the Long family and
for the whole sport; words cannot express the sense of shock
felt by the entire Eventing community. Our hearts go out to
Simon's family and all his many friends."
