Mat Langeliers Is Building A Future - page 2

At Rolex this year Langeliers used a new carving bar for his chainsaw to create the necks and heads of the massive geese at the Head of the Lake water complex, and also the faces on the Porcupine jumps later in the course. Last year he made the rattler tail on the snake jump. "I did the geese because there are so many geese around the Horse Park," he said. "Nobody's built anything like that before."

Following Rolex he'll travel to England for Badminton, then back to his native Oregon for a friend's wedding. He'll stay on the West Coast for the summer, then hopefully go back to Adelaide to work on the course there and try out his surfboard and a new Land Cruiser.

The Snake"I'll work every day for three months and then take some time to travel around," he said. "I spend a lot of summers backpacking in Europe, or up in Alaska. Sometimes I work in commercial fishing up there." Surfing, snowboarding, and backpacking all appeal to Langeliers' adventurous spirit.

Homeschooled in Oregon, he apprenticed at a number of horse-related jobs as a teenager, including working as a farrier and at a saddlebred farm. He has ridden Western competitively said, "If I ever get really rich I'd cruise around the rodeos doing roping." For now all he needs are his truck, his dog and his tools, and a destination.
