2004 Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event To Offer CCI**** and Special Selection Trials Division

Lexington, KY—November 6, 2003— Equestrian Events, Inc., organizer of the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event presented by Bayer, has announced that the 2004 Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event, scheduled for April 22-25, 2004, at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, will run its usual CCI**** and, at the request of the U.S. Equestrian Team, a special Modified Three-Day Event division for horse-and-rider combinations already qualified for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece in August. The U.S. Equestrian Team plans to use both of these divisions as Selection Trials for the Games.

The CCI****, Kentucky's hallmark competition with $190,000 in prize money, remains a qualifying competition for the 2004 Olympic Games, and includes the 7th competition for the USET Pinnacle Trophy, signifying the zenith in Eventing competition.

The 2003 Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event champions, Pippa Funnell (GBR) and Metier Consulting's Primmore's Pride, went on to win the Burghley Masterfoods Horse Trials (CCI****) in England in September, making Pippa the first rider to win the $250,000 Rolex Grand Slam of Eventing, after having won the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials (CCI****) in England on her 2002 Badminton winner, Supreme Rock, the weekend following Rolex Kentucky. Previously, no rider had ever won the world’s premier Three- Day Events in succession.

For 2004, Rolex Kentucky will offer a Modified Four Star Three-Day Event, patterned after the new short format to be introduced at the Olympic Games. This special division, recognized only by the U.S. National Federation, will be "Open to Riders residing in North America who as a combination with the entered Horse have qualified for the Olympic Games as per FEI rules and have been approved by their National Federation for entry." It will be the first time ever that horses and riders will run the shortened distance prescribed for Athens of 5,700 meters with the Four Star maximum of 45 jumping efforts.

The Modified Three-Day will include Horse Inspections and will have a short Roads and Track phase to assist competitors in warming up and traveling, unimpeded, to the start of the Cross-Country. There will be no Steeplechase or long Roads and Tracks phases.

“Rolex Kentucky has a history of hosting special divisions in Olympic years,” said Jane Atkinson, Executive Vice President of Equestrian Events, Inc. “This will not only benefit those horses and riders already qualified for Athens, but also will be an exciting addition for our spectators.”
