Two-Time Athens Olympic Medalist Kim Severson Takes Over The Lead in Fair Hill International CCI*** Presented by Dansko

Athens Olympic Medalist Kim Severson Photo by Diana De Rosa Fair Hill, Maryland—October 15, 2004—Two-time Athens Olympic Medalist Kim Severson took over the lead in the Fair Hill International CCI*** Three-Day Event following the completion of the dressage phase at the 16th annual Fair Hill International Festival in the Country, presented by Dansko.

Fresh from winning individual Silver and team Bronze Medals at the 2004 Olympic Games, Severson, of Scottsville, VA, turned in a solid performance aboard Royal Venture for a score of 36.8.

Severson’s Athens Bronze Medal teammate Amy Tryon of Redmond, WA, rode My Beau to a one-phase score of 42.8 penalties. Only one point behind Tryon in third place following dressage was Bruce “Buck” Davidson, Jr. of Unionville, PA. Davidson, who won the Markham Trophy as the highest placing Young Rider in the USEF Fall Eventing Championship at Fair Hill in 1996, earned a score of 43.8 on Idalgo.

Competition at this year’s Fair Hill International continues with the exciting cross country phase on Saturday and culminates with the show jumping phase on Sunday.

This year’s CCI is being run under the sport’s new modified format that does not have a steeplechase prior to cross country. When asked what they thought about the shortened format, the Fair Hill CCI competitors had mixed emotions.

“I support the short format,” said Severson, “but it will be a very different experience. It will take a lot out of the horses.”

An internationally-sanctioned 100-mile endurance ride has been added to the traditional CCI championship on the featured schedule at this year’s Fair Hill International. The CEI*** 100-mile endurance ride, a prelude to next year’s anticipated North American Endurance Championship at Fair Hill, will be held on Saturday, the same day as the eventing cross country. This will give everyone at Fair Hill that day what is sure to be one of the most dynamic and exciting days on the year’s equestrian sports calendar.

While world-class equestrian competition makes the Fair Hill International a rare treat for spectators, the amenities at Fair Hill round out the event to provide an ideal family outing. The Country Shops boast a wide variety of shopping and dining, featuring vendors of tack, jewelry, artwork, pet needs, exceptional apparel and fine gifts for the approaching holiday seasons. The Fair Hill Club offers fine dining, while visitors seeking a more casual snack or meal will find pubs around the Fair Hill grounds serving classic Maryland crab-cakes and other treats. In fact, the Maryland Department of Agriculture named the Fair Hill International as a “Maryland Top Event!”

Fair Hill’s ever-popular dog agility trials have returned this year with over 400 canine competitors. Additional activities include Maryland State Police K-9 demonstrations and appearances by the Delmarva Miniature Horse Club, presented by the Canis Lupus Wolf Foundation and Whispering Horse Farm. Other activities include friends from the Winterthur booth, offering quick crafts for children and a family sign-up opportunity, and the Chesapeake Foundation Booth, where spectators can learn more about the Chesapeake Bay and related environmental concerns.
