An Introduction to Eventing

Richard Rader at the 1997 Rolex Kentucky Three Day EventWelcome to the world of eventing, also known as combined training, which has become one of the fastest growing equestrian pursuits.

Developed from the cavalry competitions in the early 1900's, which tested officers' mounts, this demanding and exciting sport encompasses three separate tests, each scored individually but added together for final results, thus the term"combined training."

These scores are in the form of penalty points: the competitor with the lowest score is the winner.

The three disciplines, which are a test of both horse and riders' athleticism and partnership, are:

  • The precision and grace of dressage
  • The boldness and rigors of cross country
  • The exactness and skill of stadium jumping
  • All scoring is done on a penalty basis and is cumulative
