Dressage

David O'Connor at the 1996 Olympic GamesIn the dressage phase, a series of classical movements are performed in and enclosed arena. Each movement is judged separately and is based on obedience, suppleness, harmony and balance.

The challenge for the event horse in the dressage phase requires focus and concentration, when they are often extremely fit and ready for cross country.

A smart event horse often knows that the cross country phase in next, and can easily be distracted by the site of the cross country course, or even just the memory that after Dressage it gets to run and jump!
