Norman Borlaug University announces a three-part, 6-hour, Internet-delivered course entitled Selecting the Right Horse, authored by Dr. Craig Wood, formerly Extension equine specialist and now Director of Distance Learning at the University of Kentucky, and Ashley Griffin, 4-H Extension Associate for equine youth activities at the same university.

This non-credit course is composed of three modules: [1] General Considerations (1.5 hours), [2] Conformation (3 hours) and [3] Quality of Movement (1.5 hours). "After completing this course, the learner should be able to identify the parts of a horse and its skeletal system, recognize correct and incorrect conformation, and develop his or her own system for evaluation," says Wood.

The course applies the most recent technology. It is amply illustrated with drawings, photographs and streaming video. Interactive exercises and quizzes provide self-tests. Links to breed organizations are provided, and the professors are available to answer questions via e-mail.

"I was in the market for a horse, so the timing was great for me," says Donna Dunkelberger, of Steamboat Springs, Colo. "I had just studied the conformation portion when I saw ‘Moose.’ He looked like one of the illustrations of how a horse ought to be built."
