Legendary King Ranch Featured on Next "America's Horse" Television Program - Best known ranch in the world celebrates 150th anniversary

Amarillo, Texas - May 6. 2003 - It's not just a ranch, it's the King Ranch, and "America's Horse," American Quarter Horse Association's weekly television show on the Outdoor Life Network (OLN), presents a one-hour tour of this national landmark on May 7.

King Ranch has been an innovator in the ranching industry for 150 years and is credited with many developments including the Santa Gertrudis, the first beef breed of cattle developed in the United States; dipping vats to eradicate disease; and its own brand of fencing.

Its ties to the American Quarter Horse Association trace back to the founding of AQHA in 1940, and Wimpy P-1, bred by King Ranch, became the first registered American Quarter Horse. King Ranch also influenced the cutting industry with legends Mr San Peppy and Peppy San Badger, also known as Little Peppy who is one of the National Cutting Horse Association's all-time leading sires. Additionally, King Ranch bred Assault, Thoroughbred racing's only Triple Crown winner from Texas.

"America's Horse" tours the 825,000-acre ranch, which is home to nearly 57,000 head of cattle, nearly 400 American Quarter Horses and an abundance of wildlife, including bobwhite quail, white-tailed deer, javelina and nilgai, also known as the Indian antelope. Meet the Kineños, or "King's men," who have worked at King Ranch for six generations.

An encore episode of this show is set for Sunday, June 22 at 2:30 p.m. Eastern

America's Horse, AQHA's magazine free to all AQHA members, also will feature King Ranch in its September/October issue.

From historic ranches and premier competitions to scenic trail rides and colorful people, "America's Horse" leads the way in equestrian lifestyle television. In 2003, AQHA brings 130 hours of television dedicated to the American Quarter Horse lifestyle to OLN viewers. A full hour of "America's Horse" awaits viewers Wednesday nights at 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Eastern. Viewers also can enjoy an encore episode Sundays at 2:30 p.m. Eastern.

The Outdoor Life Network is found on cable networks and a number of satellite systems including DIRECTV (directv.com, Channel 608) and the Dish Network (dishnetwork.com, Channel 151). If your local cable provider doesn't offer OLN, call and request it.
