WORLD ENDURANCE CHAMPIONSHIP IN THE UAE

The 1998 World Endurance Championships held on 10 December in the United Arab Emirates proved to be the first truly global FEI Championship. For the first time competitors from all the continents competed on their own horses at an FEI Championship. One hundred and sixty three (163) riders from 36 nations started.

Despite technical problems with the computer scoring system, the course - and especially the vet gates - organisation was excellent. The results also showed the universality of Endurance Riding with the USA winning the Gold Individual with Valerie Kanavy, followed by Italy's Fausto Fiorucci and the Bronze going to Japan's Daisuke Yasunaga. In the Team event Gold went to New Zealand, followed by the USA and Australia, this was made all the more remarkable as this was the first time a New Zealand team had taken part in the Championships.

The world wide turn out included many National Federations who had never taken part in Endurance at this level, and proved that Endurance is the FEI's fastest growing discipline.
