World Riders Rankings used for Individual Olympic Qualification
For the first time the World Rankings will be used for the Olympic qualification of individual riders. This expanded use of the Computer List necessitated a review of the criteria to establish the Computer Lists Jumping and Dressage.

The major change concerns the number of competitions which will be taken into account. Up to 1998 all results obtained in a 12 months period were counted. From now on, only the 30 best results in Jumping and the 15 best results in Dressage are taken into account.

For Eventing, the same point system as used for the past years will apply for the World Event Rider Rankings, with the exception of the definition of the zones, which has now been lined up with the Olympic Qualifications Region division.

Hugo Simon leads again the FEI/BCM World Riders Rankings
As a result of the new rankings, the total number of points, especially of the top placed riders, have decreased but at the same time the basic hierarchy among the best riders has remained unchanged. There has been however a change between the 1st and 2nd place. In spite of being inactive for several weeks, Hugo Simon has taken over the Number-one-spot again. Ludger Beerbaum, who was the Number one since March 1998, is now second. It is the 5th time that Hugo Simon leads the rankings. But until now his reign has never lasted more than 2 consecutive months. The points gained by Beerbaum in Hannover last year do not count any longer. While in 1998 he was 6th for 84.7 points, he did not get any points 1999. Hugo Simon, Ludger Beerbaum as well as the third placed Willy Melliger are, however, close together: only 26 points separate Simon and Beerbaum, and Melliger is only 11 points behind.

FEI and BCM co-operation
Following a couple of meetings held in January and February 1999, the FEI and Best Communications Management (BCM) in Holland have decided to continue their co-operation especially in the communications area and intensifying the mutual work on the FEI/BCM World Riders Rankings for Jumping and Dressage and their publication in the FEI Press News.

The FEI/BCM World Rankings will be used for the qualification procedure of the 2000 Olympic Games both in Jumping and Dressage. A separate list will be issued during the year leading to the Sydney Olympic Games including the current state of qualification. This list will be called the Olympic Qualification List.

FEI WORLD RIDER RANKINGS EVENTING CRITERIA

1. CRITERIA FOR POINTS ALLOCATION FOR THREE DAY EVENT RIDER RANKINGS

Points are awarded on both a Global and Regional basis, the current Regions for the Olympic Games are divided into FEI Olympic Qualification Groups as follows:
Europe A (North- West)
Europe B (South West)
Europe C (Central and Eastern Africa/Middle East)
South East Asian
North America
South America

Points are awarded on a basis related to the star rating of the individual event and a set of points has been devised that rewards the rider according to the status of the qualifying event and his/her finishing position.

A rider must complete the event in order to receive points.

A rider's best six scores over the season count towards his/her final position on the table. In order to benefit countries where there are fewer CCI events, riders who enter several horses in an event may score points with each horse.

A competitor may enter events in any Zone in order to gain points and prize money in the Global Rankings. The nationality of the rider determines in which zone he/she will gain points for the Zone Rankings. At the end of the season, final Global and Zone rankings will be published. In the case of a tie, the best placing at the highest level event will decide. If this still results in a tie, the next level down will decide and so on.

For the 2000 Olympic Games, only 3 and 4 star Three Day Events in the Global list will count toward the Rankings. The ranking list will be calculated over the period of 1st January 1999 to 1st March 2000 (deadline for NF/NOCs to gain eligibility)
