FEI Husky - PERA World Event Riders Rankings Ceremony
The 1998 FEI HUSKY-PERA World Event Rider Rankings Awards Ceremony and Gala Ball was held in London on 11 March 1999 to recognise the worldís best Eventing riders; approximately 300 people gathered to celebrate the occasion.

This special evening honoured the global top 15 riders each of whom received a beautiful glass trophy and prize money. Blyth Tait (NZL) clinched the 1998 Ranking title for the fifth time. Tait was succeeded by Mark Todd and Andrew Nicholson, two more New Zealanders. The top 3 finishers of the six regional zones were also honoured and awarded prize money.

The first-ever Ownerís Cup was presented to The Kiwi Bell Syndicate (NZL), owner of most of Blyth Taitís horses. "Broadcast News" who happens to be owned by Giuseppe Veronesi of HUSKY, earned the title of the Worldís No. 1 Horse.

Total prize money awarded during the evening exceeded £50í000.

2002 WEG Agreement signing ceremony
During an official ceremony held in Jerez on 12 March, the 2002 World Equestrian Games agreement was formally signed by Mr Luis Figueroa, President of the Spanish Equestrian federation, Mr Pedro Patcheco, Mayor of Jerez and H.R.H. The Infanta DoÒa Pilar de BorbÛn, FEI President. Among other personalities, the following took part in the ceremony : Mr Francisco Villar, State Sport Secretary, Mr Alfredo Goyeneche, President of the Spanish Olympic Committee and great friend of equestrian sport: he rode at the 1960 Rome Olympic Games and was the former President of the Spanish Equestrian Federation.

FEI JUDGE BECOMES PRESIDENT OF COSTA RICA
The International Jumping judge Miguel Angel Rodriguez has been elected President of the Republic of Costa Rica. Everybody is involved in horses in the Rodriguez family: his wife competed internationally in Dressage and his sons are competing in jumping.

LIST OF JUDGES/MR TROND ASMYR (NOR)
The FEI would like to apologise for an incorrect publication in its Bulletin No. 1/99 and Press News 4/99 regarding the death of Mr. Trond Asmyr which is due to a great misunderstanding.

Happily, Mr. Asmyr is alive and well. The FEI would like to sincerely apologise for this unfortunate error and have asked all the National Federations to take note that Mr. Asmyr is, of course, maintained on the FEI list of judges.

FEI WORLD CUP JUMPING SITUATION IN THE LEAGUES
THE FOLLOWING 10 LEAGUES HAVE ENDED THEIR QUALIFICATIONS:

CENTRAL EUROPEAN LEAGUE (2 QUALIFIED)

150 riders from 21 countries competed in 17 competitions. There was, for the first time, a competition in Almaty, Kazakhstan. On the other hand Istanbul and Kiev had to be cancelled, the former for Veterinary, the latter for economic reasons. Jozsef Turi and George Rossiadis intend to compete in the Final.

CANADIAN LEAGUE (3 QUALIFIED)

25 riders from 3 countries competed in 6 competitions (22 Canadians, 2 Colombians and 1 rider from Puerto Rico). The three top placed riders - Mario Deslauriers, Eric Lamaze and John Pierce - intend to compete in the Final:

27 Japanese riders competed in 6 competitions. The winner, Tadayoshi Hayashi, will compete in the Final. He already competed in the 1994 World Cup Final in 's-Hertogenbosch.

SOUTH AMERICAN LEAGUE - SOUTHERN PART (2 QUALIFIED)

73 riders from 9 countries competed in 8 competitions, held in Brazil (4), Argentina (3) and Chile (1). Vitor Alves Teixeira of Brazil was the league winner, ahead of his countryman Rodrigo Moraes Sarmento.

SOUTH AMERICAN LEAGUE - NORTHERN PART (1 QUALIFIED)

15 riders from Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador competed in 3 competitions, all held in Caracas, Venezuela. Felipe Cardenas of Colombia was the League winner, ahead of his countryman Germ·n Camargo. He intends to compete in the Final.

SOUTH EAST ASIAN LEAGUE (1 QUALIFIED)

33 riders from 5 countries competed in 6 competitions. There was, for the first time, an event in Singapore. Marie Antoinette Leviste from the Philippines won the League and is qualified to compete in the Final. She will - together with the second and third placed, the brothers Ambak - compete in the Pre-Final in Heilbronn (GER), and later also in the Final.

SOUTH AFRICAN LEAGUE (1 QUALIFIED)

20 South African riders competed in 5 events. Miranda Collings is the League winner. The runner-up, Ronnie Lawrence, intends to compete in the Final

AUSTRALIAN LEAGUE (2 QUALIFIED)

65 Australian riders competed in 12 competitions. Newcomer Aaron Williamson was the winner of the League, ahead of Colleen Brook. Williamson will compete in the Final.

NEW ZEALAND LEAGUE (1 QUALIFIED)

23 New Zealand riders competed in 9 competitions. John Cottle won again the League with 76 points (3 wins) ahead of Catriona McLeod, also with 76 points, but with only 2 wins. Ann Wilson was in third place with 68 points. Catriona McLeod will compete in the Final.

USA WEST COAST LEAGUE (2 QUALIFIED)

46 riders from 10 countries competed in 8 competitions. Richard Spooner, who finished an excellent fourth in last year's Final, won the League, ahead of Nicole Shahinian Simpson and Will Simpson, Nicole's husband.

THE SITUATION IN THE OTHER LEAGUES:

WESTERN EUROPEAN LEAGUE (18 TO QUALIFY)

9 of the 12 competitions have been held. Remaining are 's-Hertogenbosch (21 March), Aarhus (4 April) and Dortmund (11 April).

Beat M”ndli with 68 points is again in the lead ahead of his countryman Willi Melliger (60), Jan Tops (59) and the Paris-winner Ludger Beerbaum (58).

Assuming that 38 points should be enough to be qualified for the Final, 9 riders plus the defending champion, Rodrigo Pessoa, can start thinking of making the trip:

8 of the 10 competitions have been held. Remaining are 2 competitions in Tampa (21 March and 28 March).

McLain Ward with 91 points is clearly in the lead, ahead of Peter Leone (69), Margie Goldstein Engle (67) and Peter Wylde (60). They should have enough points to be qualified for G–teborg.

MEXICAN LEAGUE

All events in the Mexican League were cancelled for economical reasons.
