AQHA Develops Equestrians with Disabilities Program

Amarillo, Texas - November 6, 2002-The American Quarter Horse Association announces the development of a new program specifically designed for those who love the American Quarter Horse regardless of their physical or mental abilities.

The AQHA Equestrians with Disabilities competition is a new type of AQHA-approved event consisting of three classes - walk and trot hunt seat equitation on the flat, walk and jog western horsemanship and walk and jog trail horse. The classes can be held at AQHA-approved shows and events or can be stand-alone competitions.

"It's important to ensure that everyone has a place to fit in when it comes to competing," said Bill Brewer, AQHA Executive Vice President. "Several groups and individuals were instrumental in the development of this program to make it a safe and rewarding competition for participants."

Exhibitors must be AQHA or American Quarter Horse Youth Association members. However, the riders or their families do not have to own the American Quarter Horse which they show.

A rider's card from the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA) and/or a special adaptive equipment and riding ability form must be completed by a certified NARHA and/or therapeutic instructor or Special Olympics coach to compete in these events.

In addition to earning achievement points which will be recorded on both the exhibitor's and horse's records, a year-end, high-point award will be established for each class for both the high-point exhibitor and high-point horse.
