Dell Hendricks Leads NRHA Earnings in 2003

November 19, 2003 - Dell Hendricks' name has become synonymous with reining excellence and his "let it all hang out" style and big grin have made him a favorite of reining fans worldwide.

The Tioga, Texas reining trainer has won the NRHA Futurity and been a part of the Gold Medal Reining Team USA that represents the United States in International competition. In addition, he is the only three-time National Reining Breeders Classic champion, with his latest NRBC win coming in 2003 on Reminic N Dunit, owned by Colleen and Tim McQuay and David and Bonnie Silva.

That NRBC title paid $60,000 and had a great impact on his career earnings, but it was only a portion of a landmark year. Hendricks also won the 2003 Kansas Reining Horse Association Sunflower Slide Futurity and most recently, claimed the All American Quarter Horse Congress Reining Futurity Championship on Starbucks Sidekick, owned by Doug Adair of Mesa, Arizona.

Those accomplishments pushed his career earnings past the $800,000 mark and his total winnings for 2003 have surpassed $170,000, making him the National Reining Horse Association's Leading Money Earner for 2003, before even attending the year's highest paying event, the NRHA Futurity.

"It's been a pretty incredible year," said Hendricks. "From a personal standpoint for me as an individual and for the reining industry it's wonderful that reining has grown to have so much money in it. For example, one of the horses I've ridden this year is my 2002 NRBC Champion, Starlights Wrangler. This year, his highest finish has been a second place but he's still won over $55,000."

In a year that illustrates his consistency, besides the aforementioned horses, Hendricks has ridden to the pay window on Dunnit In Hollywood, owned by Hendricks, Hill and Craig, Lenas Pegesis, owned by Vaughn Zimmerman, Hit the Lights and Sir Smart Whiz owned by Doug Adair, Smart Little Tucker owned by Joe Hayes, and Whizzen owned by Ron & Jennifer Fisher.

Hendricks' success in the competitive arena has given him a strong commitment to become more involved in the government of the National Reining Horse Association. An NRHA Board member, Dell is currently running for the office of Vice President.

"The NRHA and the reining industry have been great to me. One big reason I'm running for the Vice President office is to give something back to the industry and the association."

The venerable champion naysays references to the looming $1 Million career mark, but if his past performance is any predictor, that's another goal that will soon be reached.

Dell and his wife, Terri, operate Hendricks Reining Horses, a state-of-the-art breeding and training facility in Tioga, Texas.
