Posted April 21, 2006 NRBC Open First Go Ends In A Four-Way Tie The National Reining Breeders Classic Open Preliminaries wrapped up Thursday, April 20, at the Great Southwest Equestrian Center in Katy, Texas, with a four-way tie for first. Cody Sapergia, Shawn Flarida, Jamie Bissell and Tom McCutcheon each marked a 223.5 and each earned $10,311 for their first-go scores. Cody, from Ardmore, Oklahoma, marked the first 223.5 Wednesday, riding JD Whizkey, by Topsail Whiz and out of JD Milligan, owned by Lance Griffin of DeWinton, Alberta. Shawn, from Springfield, Ohio, followed Wednesday riding NRHA Futurity and Derby Champion Smart Spook, by Smart Chic Olena and out of Sugarplum Spook, owned by Rosanne Sternberg of Bodiam, East Sussex. As the second section of Open riders entered the arena Thursday, high scores continued to build. Jamie Bissell, Fort Valley, Georgia, matched the leaders riding his stallion Dreamn Bout Chics, by Magnum Chic Dream and out of Im Not Blonde. Tom posted the final 223.5 riding Major Jesse, by Major Vaquero and out of Jesses Affair, owned by Tammy Beaman, of Wills Point, Texas. The top 25 in the Open division will return to the arena for the Finals Saturday evening and a 220 was needed to make that list of finalists. Jamie and Dreamn Bout Chics also topped the Intermediate Open preliminaries to earn an additional $4,116. In the Limited Open, Doug Allen, Nicole Brown and Jay McLaughlin each marked a 215.5 for first and earned $1,113. Doug rode Hollywood Dun Star, by Hollywood Eighty Six and out of Commercially Dun, owned by Francesca Sternberg of Bodiam, while Nicole teamed up with Don Leach’s Shiners Q Chex, by Shining Spark and out of Bueno Q Nic, and Jay rode Just Like Starlight, by Grays Starlight and out of Play Peekaboo, owned by Henry and Lynn Rohwedder of Waterloo, Illinois. The top 20 in each of the Intermediate Open and Limited Open divisions will compete in the finals Saturday morning. Riders needed a 216.5 for the Intermediate Open Finals and at least a 209 or better to make the Limited Open Finals. NRBC competition continues Friday with the Intermediate, Limited and Prime Time Non Pro Finals, followed by the Non Pro Finals. The day will conclude with the $25,000 Open class, which runs concurrently with the USEF qualifier and CRI.
