The 23-year-old jumper rider McLain Ward from North Salem USA has been disqualified from the 62nd CHIO Aachen. During a random tack inspection, Chief Steward, Hans Wallmeier and vet Dr. Franziska Kersten discovered several pointed plastic pins underneath the boot worn on the right leg by his 12-year-old grey Belgian gelding Benetton E.

The horse was subsequently examined by a second veterinarian, who could not find any injury to the horse's leg. President of the appeals committee Heinz Schutte announced the decision to disqualify Ward from the competition and send him and his horse home, at a press conference held Wednesday, June 16. "It is not a joy," Herr Schutte said "to deal with a matter like this."

Ward was quoted as having deep regret over the incident, but declined responsibility and any knowledge of the item being there. The matter still needs further examination of the FEI to determine what further action, if any will be taken against Ward in future competitions. While asked to leave, the transport of the horse back to the United States is a complicated one at best, and it is not know at this time if the horse will actually be leaving the grounds.

Winner of Wednesday's 'Preis Von Europa' World Champion Rodrigo Pessoa on Gandini Lianos (Holsteiner by Landlord) was asked during the press conference how as a rider he felt about the discovery. He said he hoped the FEI would take responsibility to impose proper sanctions regarding the offense.

Only six riders out of a field of 58 made it to the jump off including American Riders Peter Leone on Legato and Nona Garson on Loro Piana Rhythmical finishing third and fourth respectively.
