24 Horses Killed in Fire in France

Paris (AP) -Two dozen horses trained for competition were killed Saturday, Sept 1, 2001 in a fire that swept through their stable southeast of Paris.

Four other badly burned horses were led out of their stalls alive after the 6:30 a.m. fire in Bois-le-Roi, on the northern edge of the Fontainebleau Forest.

"We couldn't enter the barn. The fire was too big, too dangerous," said Marcel Rozier, owner of the stable and former jumping training for France's Olympic team.

"We could do nothing," he said.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
