Maggie Jayne Rides in High Style in the CK Equitation Championship at the 2002 Hampton Classic Horse Show
Bridgehampton, NY August 31, 2002 Maggie Jayne of Palm Beach, FL, rode Grappa to the win in the $10,000 Calvin Klein Equitation Championship at the 27th annual Hampton Classic Horse Show in Bridgehampton, NY. The victory marked the third win in five years for Grappa, the Hanoverian gelding who last year carried Canadian Brian Walker to the winners circle after claiming top honors in 1998 for owner Sarah B. Willeman. For riders aged 14-21, Jayne and Grappa also won the first phase of competition on Thursday, besting the field of 39 entries. The top ten riders then advanced to Saturdays Final, where the winner is determined by combining the scores from both phases. Riders are judged on their riding style as they negotiate fences set at heights ranging from 36 to 39. Unique to this class is that it is the trainers of the riders who are recognized with the $10,000 Trainers Award. As the winning trainer, Missy Clark of East Aurora, NY, was awarded a trophy and $2,500, the winners portion of the $10,000 prize money. For the past three years, the Hampton Classic Horse Show has featured a very special competition, the Young Jumper Championships, Eastern League Finals, showcasing the nations top developing show jumping horses. In the $20,000 Five-Year-Old Young Jumper Championship, Todd Minikus displayed the talent of show jumpings future by capturing the win with Tres Coronas Caravelle. Bred by Miguel Avendano of Argentina, the gelding is now owned by Heather Crespo of Durham, NC. Nona Garson of Lebanon, NJ, was second with Complete while Connecticuts Christine Tribble placed third with Primo, a Dutch Warmblood gelding by Indoctro. In other equestrian action at the Hampton Classic, Laura Kraut of Oconomowoc, WI, won the $15,000 New Things Open Jumper Speed Derby riding Allegiance to edge Sydney Olympic teammate Margie Goldstein-Engle of Wellington, FL, aboard Camille. Fellow female U.S. Equestrian Team member Schuyler Riley, also of Wellington, FL, was third riding Lazuli. Paige Johnson of Middleburg, VA, was the winner in the $15,000 WGHR Farm Junior/Amatuer-Owner Jumper Classic riding Beach Bum. One of the nations top young riders, Johnson defeated Barbara Bancroft of Allison Park, PA, who was riding Mont Blanc.
