Crowds and Record Sponsorship At the 2002 Washington International Horse
Show
Washington, DC - October 29, 2002 - Record crowds and record sponsorship were achieved at the Washington International Horse Show this year, according to Dr. Sheila C. Johnson, President of the Show.
Sponsors put their faith in us and their investment paid off, said Johnson. The record funding enabled us to put on a show that was fast-paced and entertaining, attracting a record number of spectators while at the same time providing high quality competition for the top riders in the country.
With the momentum we have created here at Washington, indoors has a bright future, continued Johnson. The world has changed in the last 50 years and horse shows need to change to keep up with the times. Its no longer about long gowns and limousines; its about a packed arena with thousands and thousands of cheering people, broadening the interest in our sport and helping to support it.
Attendance at the Show this year was over 45,000, according to Jody Newman, Executive Director. The Friday evening performance, with the Puissance Wall and bull riding, sold out all available seats. If we were able to do this well this year, even despite the D.C. sniper, then we may need to open up additional seating in the future, said Newman.
The Show had 69 major sponsors this year plus other smaller contributors, resulting in a record sponsorship totaling over $800,000. Without these sponsors, we would not be able to put on the Washington International Horse Show, emphasized WIHS President Sheila Johnson. Everyone involved in the horse show world owes a tremendous thank you to our generous sponsors.
Highlights from the 2002 Washington International Horse Show will be shown in a one-hour television special to be aired nationwide on Fox Sports Net on Thursday, December 5 at 3:00 pm (check local listings). |
