Riders will face a vigorous test in the $25,000 High Prairie Grand Prix on Saturday July 8. The winner will try for the $100,000 bonus for the horse and rider that can win again on July 15 and 22. Local riders such as John McConnell, Paul Rohrbach and Michael Dennehy are expected to fare well this year. Both McConnell and Rohrbach have had grand prix wins in Oklahoma and New Mexico respectively. “The international riders always receive a lot of attention,” said Christine DeHerrera, media coordinator for the Park. “This year a few of the local riders are really strong. No one has ever won the Colorado Horse Park Triple Crown; maybe this will be the year.” Grand prix show jumping is an Olympic sport that pits men and women equally against one another. Horses and riders will face towering obstacles five feet in height and up to six feet in width in front of thousands of cheering spectators. “These grand prix have become a tradition in the Denver area. For more than a decade top international riders have come to the Colorado Horse Park and the local fans have been very supportive,” said DeHerrera. The $25,000 High Prairie Grand Prix on July 8 begins at 5:00 with opening ceremonies and the Douglas County Mounted Patrol serving as color guard. The first horse on course is at 5:30 p.m. The $40,000 Rocky Mountain Grand Prix Presented by Murdochs takes place July 15 at 5:00, with the grand finale, the $60,000 Grand Prix of Denver Presented by Dillards and Ariat, on July 22 at 4:30.
