| A Holistic Approach to Treating the Horse
The sixth annual Dressage at Devon Forum, Wednesday, September
29 features the Holistic approach to teaching and training the
horse will be explored at the sixth annual Dressage at Devon Forum,
Wednesday, September 29, at 5:30 p.m. The event, presented in
conjunction with Practical Horseman magazine, will feature Dr.
Joyce C. Harman, D.V.M., M.R.C.V.S, as the guest speaker.
Dr. Harman, who has a background in traditional veterinary medicine,
studied equine exercise physiology and sports medicine in England,
Ireland and Switzerland where she was investigating better, safer
ways to treat horses. Upon her return to the United States, while
working in a large equine practice, she began to explore the use
of acupuncture as a treatment for horses who were not responding
to conventional medicine. She became a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist
in 1990 and set up the Harmany Equine Clinic in Virginia. In 1994
she became a Certified Veterinary Chiropractor and also completed
an advanced homeopathic course for veterinarians.
In her current practice, Dr. Harman uses acupuncture, chiropractic,
homeopathy and nutrition to help horses to realize their potential.
She finds the best approach for the horse is a team approach involving
veterinarians, therapists, farriers, dentists, riding instructors,
and saddle experts. She is in the process of starting the first
all-species holistic health magazine, The Natural Animal.
