2002 World Equestrian Games History Is Made At 2002 World Equestrian Games Debbie McDonald
The duo started their test with a perfect halt, followed by a fancy extended trot and sweeping half-pass. The transition to passage from the extended trot was beautiful and precise. Power and rhythm marked the big mare's piaffe, which was very correct though she exhibited a slight forward movement rather than on the spot performance. The reinback was lovely and fluid. Flying changes in the two and one tempis were performed with ease and grace. There was perhaps a small glitch in steps after the final trot extension when pilot McDonald was almost too precise in her aim at F, and Brentina appeared to get too close to the fence and had to take a few tiny steps to turn. Finishing with a spectacular centerline, the big mare demonstrated power and grace to the final halt. A grinning McDonald raised her fist in triumph knowing that she had put in a fabulous ride. She used both hands to pat and hug the big mare walking out of the arena to cheers and whistles. The judges were with her, awarding her 74.60%. McDonald moved into second place, unchallenged by the final three riders of the day and putting her in third place overall at the conclusion of the Grand Prix competition. McDonald said she is "trying not to think about" an individual Gold Medal, but that she is "excited that we've come this far." |
