CHIO Aachen
Selection
Trials for the Olympic Games 2004 in Athens
June 5,
2003
In
Aachen's Soers The terms "Aachen-Laurensberger Rennverein e.V."
(ALRV) and the "tournament grounds in Aachen's Soers" are
normally connected with the most famous names of riding and driving
sports- which is of course true for the World Equestrian Festival, CHIO
Aachen. This year the situation will be a little dif-ferent. For the
first time in the ALRV's history, a tournament will be carried out directly
previous to the CHIO Aachen for those nations, which are represented
rather sparsely in equestrian sports. On June 14th and 15th, thus in
the run-up of the World Equestrian Festival, CHIO Aachen, which will
take place from June 17th to 22nd, the official selection trials for
the Olympic Games 2004 in Athens will be carried out. Altogether 15
nations will attempt to qualify for Athens in Aachen; nine teams, each
with three or four riders maximal five horses, and nine individual riders
will compete in show jumping both on Saturday and Sunday. The participants
will arrive in Aachen as of Wednesday.
On the
day previous to the official trials, which will be carried out on Sunday,
June 15th, a preliminary show jumping competition will take place, which
will though not have any influence on the possible participation in
the Olympic Games 2004.
On Sunday
things will become serious, when the riders get the chance to
qualify for Athens 2004. For that, the obstacles will be heightened
- up
to 1,60 metres - and the participants will have to get over the obstacles
both in a first and a second round. Aside to the individual riders,
also the teams of the different nations will start, respectively subsequent
to the rounds of the individuals. Finally the winner will be determined
in a potential jump-off.
But not
only the winner will have a reason to celebrate: the five best individual
riders and the three best teams will not only obtain prizes in this
competition, but will be qualified for the Olympic Games 2004 in Athens.
Especially the two best riders of this competition can be happy, because
they will have the privilege to start at the World Equestrian Festival,
CHIO Aachen which will begin two days later.
