U.S. Show Jumpers Nail It in Nation's Cup, Securing Their Spot in the 2004 Athens Olympic Games

Round One Sets the Pace with Three Clear Rounds

Chris Kappler on Royal KaliberAfter all four U.S. riders went in the first of the two round Nation’s Cup competition only Lauren and Windy City knocked down a rail for four faults. “The foot in the water was a rider error,” she later explained. The rest of the riders went clear. Since one rider’s score is dropped the U.S. team maintained its lead.

The other teams were not as lucky. While the U.S. was leading on the same score after the first round of 1.66, all the other teams added penalty points to their scores. Mexico maintained its second place position after the first round (15.87/9 faults). Brazil (35.39) moved ahead of Argentina after they accumulated 20 faults to Argentina’s 29 (42.57). Canada moved into fifth (45.15) after each of their rider’s knocked one or more rails including Ian Millar who had two rails down with Promise Me. Then it was Chile (54.16), Guatemala (55.06), Colombia (59.79) and Ecuador (141.50).
