Gifts Of The Road Less Traveled
The Kentucky Backroads
by JJ. Hathaway

Kentucky kept enticing us back in May, as we returned to Woodspring Farm in Versailles to finish up some photo and web work we were doing for Kathy Priest. Unencumbered by our 33' camper this trip, we decided to take the road less traveled, from our hotel in Richmond, KY off of I-75, that being rural route 169. The fields and rolling hills were lush with color, as we drove along the winding country roads. Inadvertently we turned back the clock in time and experienced yesterday.

We like to take the back roads hoping to experience unannounced vistas, and this day was no different. At the start of the highway there was a sign that said ' NO TURNAROUND 11 MILES AHEAD'. That, however, did not dissuade us from venturing further. We thought, "What do we need to turn around for anyway?" and continued on. It didn't take long to figure out what the sign meant as we were faced with a dead end at the Kentucky River in Jessamine County, where the history of the region began and continues today.
