Gifts Of The Road Less Traveled
The Kentucky Backroads - page 3
by JJ. Hathaway

Passage is free and provided by funding through the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Schoolchildren cross twice each day, being left off on one side of the river by bus, and picked up by another after they ride across. An average of 400 vehicles use this route daily.

After you exit the ferry, a stop at the old country store in Spears is a must. You'll sit on milk cans and enjoy country cuisine alongside the checkerboards and charm.

As a side note, Mary is a DAR, (Daughter of the American Revolution), whose fifth Great-Grandfather Shadrack Phelps was in the accompaniment of Daniel Boone at Boonesboro. In all likelihood, he could easily have been with Boone, as he escorted homesteaders into western Kentucky via the Valley View Ferry. Shadrack Phelps later homesteaded in Russell County, Kentucky where he established Phelps Acres in 1789. The Family Farm House, which is on the historical register of Kentucky, still stands and is owned by Mary' sister Nancy Phelps. Those two would certainly spice up the DAR meetings!
