Throughout six challenging selection trials, twenty-five Zone 10 Young Rider candidates vied for five slots on the 1999 Zone 10 Young Rider team. In the end, Nicole Padilla and Joe led the field of Young Riders aged 16-21 to represent Zone 10 at the North American Young Rider Championships August 10-15, 1999 at Tempel Farms in Wadsworth, Illinois.

Accompanying Padilla will be Ashely Herman and Sunrise, Blakely Wickstrom and Rodeo, Eva Gonda and El Campeon's Invitational, with Alyssa Hecht and Makaha as the alternate. The Zone 10 team will compete against teams from other Zones, as well as teams from Canada and Mexico. Once again, Hap Hansen will serve as Chef d'Equipe. As the highest placed qualifier, Nicole Padilla will be honored with the Dayspring Cup at the annual Zone 10 Awards Banquet in January 2000.

Zone 10 encompasses Califorinia and Nevada, and provided programs of many types to all levels of hunter/jumper exhibitors throughout the Zone. In addition to the Young Rider program, the Zone has various educational programs, including the Zone 10 Horsemanship Challenge with levels for Pony, Children's and Junior riders.
