Caristo Cup Award Initiated at 2005 CN North American Young Riders’ Championships, Presented by Adequan

Frank Madden, Ralph Caristo, Brianne GoutalA new award to be presented annually was initiated at the 2005 CN North American Young Riders’ Championships Presented by Adequan. The award is named in honor of Ralph Caristo who has had a remarkable career as chef d’equipe of the Zone 2 show jumping team.

The Caristo Cup was created in Ralph's honor by Susie Humes, Susie Schoelkoepf, Leo Conroy, David Distler and Karen and Heather Caristo and was awarded for the first time at this year’s championships held at the Virginia Horse Center under the direction of Brian and Penny Ross.

The award is to be given each year to one chef d’equipe at the North American Young Riders’ Championships who exhibits the same spirit of sportsmanship, horsemanship and enthusiasm that Ralph brings to his position.

Following are the words that were read at this year’s Championships’ closing ceremonies where the award was made public and presented for the first time:

Ralph Caristo“Ralph Caristo is the ultimate chef d’equipe for any Young Riders team. His dedication and enthusiasm is evident in every detail from beginning to end. Zone 2 has been lucky enough to have had Ralph as its chef for many years and under his guidance Zone 2 has won more gold medals - both individual and team- than any Zone in the history of these Championships; and this was true even before this year when Ralph’s Zone 2 team won all four Gold Medals in the two show jumping divisions as well as two Silvers and one Bronze.

But what Ralph and his wife Holly bring to a team goes beyond all the medals. It starts with Ralph’s enthusiasm and dedication, and his commitment to sportsmanship. From the first day's jog to the winning pictures on the final day, the tack room is organized and beautiful. Ralph always wears a tie and jacket and his riders are also properly attired. The intense team spirit of Ralph's riders is contagious and obvious to all.”

The award was then presented for the first time by one of Zone 2’s leading trainers, Frank Madden, and Brianne Goutal, the Zone 2 rider who won individual and team Gold Medals at this year’s Championships. The winner of the first Caristo Cup, quite naturally, was none other than Ralph Caristo!

“This is just unbelievable,” said Ralph who, along with his wife Holly who works side by side with him each year at the Championships, kept wiping away the tears flowing down his cheeks. “We have such a strong tradition in Zone 2 and there are so many people who make it happen. I’m afraid I’ll leave people out if I start to thank them all, but just look at the help I had here with me this year with Frank Madden, Missy Clark, John Brennan, Chris Kappler and, of course, Holly. Plus there are so many other people who have made Zone 2 special. But I have to say that I am deeply honored to have this award named in my honor and I can’t say enough about what an incredible experience Young Riders is.”
