Anky Van Grunsven To Carry Dutch Flag in Opening Ceremonies for the 2000 Olympic Games
No equestrian rider has ever carried the flag for Holland. van Grunsven's accomplishments are unsurpassed. The 1996 Olympic Individual and Team Silver Medallist, van Grunsven went on to win a world record number of World Cup Championships, and is the reigning European Champion. The medals that have still eluded her are the Individual and Team Olympic Gold. With her longtime companion, Gestion Bonfire, van Grunsven is always strongest in the "Kur", The Individual Freestyle, where horse and rider perform to music, a concept similar to figure skating. "I'm very honored, it is one in a million chance to carry the flag in an Opening Ceremony." Anky said. By the way this is not Anky's first time to have this honor. "When I was riding as a little girl in the pony club, I carried the flag during the parade on top of my pony. Unfortunately Bonfire can't help me this time!" Anky van Grunsven has "Super Star" status in her country where even those not interested in equestrian sports know her name. Anky® is a trademarked name which has branded her own line of equestrian clothing, equipment, and she even has a horse van designed and named for her.
