David O'Connor Wins Glorious Gold
Andrew HOY (AUS) clinched the silver on a score of 39.80, and the legendary Mark TODD (NZL) grabbed the bronze with 42. As competitors rode the showjumping in reverse order of placing, the suspense grew. It was not until O'CONNOR completed his round that the medals were decided. O'CONNOR's horse CUSTOM MADE knocked down the first element of the treble halfway through the course. With the margin between himself and HOY disappearing, O'CONNOR completed the tense round with no further faults. Andrew HOY, fresh from winning a gold medal in the Team Three-Day Event, completed a brilliant clear round on the Thoroughbred SWIZZLE INN. Crowd-favourite HOY adds this silver medal to his collection of three gold medals, gained in three successive Olympic games. When finishing his final international Three-Day Event, Mark Todd jumped a clear round on EYESPY II, but his caution proved costly, with three time penalties to add to his score. TODD finishes his eventing career with a bronze medal to hang beside the two gold medals he collected at Los Angeles and Seoul. The biggest upset of the day was Heidi ANTIKATZIDIS (GRE), who lost
her second placing with two rails down and time faults in the showjumping.
