Stress Free - The Key

Kathleen Raine and Fidelia Markell was familiar with ulcers because he had been involved in some studies. "We found that over 50% of the show jumpers we tested in a random scoping had ulcers. Now, it wasn't necessarily true that 100% of those horses had clinical signs."

With the Olympics looming before them Markell and Raine decided to focus on what could be done before during and after the Olympics to keep "Fiddle" from feeling the stress. Kathleen and her horse had a lot ahead of them, beginning with the tough selection trials, and continuing with a quarantine in the U.S., a long flight to Sydney, a quarantine in Sydney, new living conditions, a change in temperature and climate and then making sure they would be ready at a moment's notice should they need to step in and take a place on the U.S. Olympic squad.

It wasn't only Raine and Markell who understood the importance of helping to eliminate the stress of these Olympic Games. It has been high on the priority list of the riders, grooms, trainers, chef d'équipes and veterinarians for all the horses.
