Win Team Gold in Olympic Showjumping Germany took the gold on a score of 15 penalties, Switzerland the silver on 16 and Brazil the bronze with 24 in what became an almighty battle in the Team Showjumping competition. Germany, keen to add a seventh Team showjumping title to their pot of Olympic gold, outclassed the opposition with clear rounds from Otto BECKER (GER) and Lars NIEBERG (GER). Switzerland was not willing to give up their chance of gold without a fight, but a clear from the final rider in the second round, Willi MELLIGER (SUI), could not erode that elusive penalty that separated first and second place. This is the first showjumping medal Switzerland has won since 1924. A tie for third place meant that Brazil and France had to jump off against the clock for the bronze medal. The flamboyant Brazilians lifted the bronze with some determined riding from the same team that won the bronze in Atlanta. The first rider in the jump off, Luiz Felipe de AZEVEDO (BRA) riding the speedy RALPH 12, threw out the challenge with a clear round in a time of 43.72. The French were unable to match Brazil's performance. The Individual Showjumping medals will be decided on Sunday, 1 October,
when the top 45 riders compete over two rounds. |
